The Climate Emergency and Delivering Low Carbon
At Senacare, sustainability is a guiding principle that shapes both our business practices and service delivery. We are committed to supporting the London Borough of Harrow’s ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. As a provider of essential care services, we recognise the environmental challenges our operations may pose and are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint while maintaining the highest standards of care. Our vision encompasses eco-friendly practices across all aspects of our organisation, ensuring that we contribute positively to environmental sustainability and the well-being of the communities we serve.
Our approach to sustainability begins with our vehicle fleet, a significant contributor to CO2 emissions due to the nature of our services. We understand that transitioning to a greener fleet is a critical step toward achieving Harrow’s carbon neutrality goals. Over the past two years, we have embarked on a phased program to replace our existing vehicles with low-emission and zero-emission alternatives. By the end of 2025, we aim for 50% of our fleet to consist of electric vehicles (EVs) or ultra-low-emission vehicles (ULEVs), with the goal of achieving a fully carbon-neutral fleet by 2030. This transition is supported by the installation of EV charging points at our Harrow and Sutton offices, ensuring infrastructure is in place to support our growing fleet of electric vehicles.
To further reduce emissions, we encourage staff who use E-bikes or Moped vehicles for work to adopt low-emission options. We offer financial incentives to those who opt in for Cycle to work scheme or those who choose to get Mopeds. For staff who may not have access to EVs, we are exploring partnerships with vehicle leasing companies to provide affordable leasing options. These measures reflect our commitment to creating a sustainable future not only within our organisation but also among our employees.
Tracking and reducing the carbon impact of our fleet is a top priority. We have implemented GPS-enabled telematics systems in all vehicles, enabling us to monitor fuel consumption, driving behaviour and route efficiency. This technology helps us identify areas for improvement, such as unnecessary idling or inefficient routes and implement corrective measures through driver training programs. By promoting eco-friendly driving habits, we have already achieved a 15% reduction in fuel consumption across our fleet since 2021. These efforts are complemented by route optimisation software, which clusters care visits geographically to minimise travel distances while maintaining service quality.
Beyond our fleet, we have taken significant steps to reduce our overall carbon footprint. In 2023, we transitioned all our office locations to 100% renewable energy sources, significantly lowering our emissions. Additionally, we have implemented paperless systems for rostering, care planning and documentation, resulting in a 90% reduction in paper usage over the past three years. By adopting digital tools such as Care Planner and PASS, we streamline operations while reducing resource consumption. Our aim is to achieve a 95% reduction in paper use by end of 2025, further advancing our sustainability agenda.
When delivering services under this contract, we prioritise sustainability in every aspect of care provision. Our advanced scheduling systems optimise travel routes for care workers, minimising unnecessary mileage while ensuring timely and effective service delivery. For live-in care, where travel demands are inherently lower, we integrate sustainable practices within households. Our care workers are trained to support service users in reducing energy and water waste, recycling and adopting other eco-conscious habits. By embedding sustainability into our care plans, we extend the impact of our initiatives to the wider community.
We also recognise the importance of empowering our service users to contribute to sustainability efforts. Care workers support individuals in activities such as recycling, composting and reducing household energy consumption. For example, in Harrow’s diverse communities, we tailor these initiatives to align with cultural practices and values, ensuring greater participation and impact. Additionally, we encourage service users to utilise public transport where feasible for appointments and errands. Our staff assist in planning journeys and navigating Harrow’s extensive public transport network, reducing reliance on private vehicles.
Technology plays a pivotal role in our efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition to telematics and route optimisation, we are exploring the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into scheduling processes. AI has the potential to further enhance efficiency by analysing travel patterns and predicting demand, enabling us to allocate resources with precision. These innovations ensure that our sustainability initiatives remain forward-thinking and impactful.
Measuring success in sustainability is critical to ensuring accountability and continuous improvement. At Senacare, we track key metrics such as vehicle emissions, energy consumption and resource usage. These metrics are reviewed quarterly by our sustainability committee, which includes representatives from senior management, care coordinators and staff. The committee evaluates progress against our targets and identifies opportunities for further improvement. By regularly monitoring our impact, we ensure that our efforts remain aligned with Harrow’s carbon-neutral objectives.
To communicate our progress, we produce annual sustainability reports that summarise our achievements, challenges and future plans. These reports are shared with the London Borough of Harrow and other stakeholders, providing transparency and fostering collaboration. Additionally, we maintain open dialogue with the council to ensure our initiatives are consistent with their broader sustainability strategy. Milestones, such as the transition to renewable energy or the introduction of EVs, are celebrated within our team and the community to build collective ownership of our sustainability goals.
Our targets are ambitious but achievable. By 2025, we aim for 50% of our fleet to consist of EVs or ULEVs, with a fully carbon-neutral fleet by 2030. We are committed to reducing travel-related emissions by an additional 20% over the next three years through enhanced route optimisation and driver training. Our shift to paperless systems aims for a 95% reduction in paper usage by end of 2025. These targets are embedded in our strategic planning, ensuring that sustainability remains a priority across all levels of the organisation.
The achievements we have made so far demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and our ability to deliver meaningful results. From reducing fuel consumption and paper usage to transitioning to renewable energy, our actions reflect a genuine dedication to supporting Harrow’s carbon-neutral goals. By building on this foundation, we aim to lead by example, showing that environmentally conscious practices can coexist with exceptional care delivery.
At Senacare, sustainability is more than an obligation, it is an opportunity to make a lasting positive impact on the environment and the communities we serve. Through our comprehensive approach, we are contributing to a greener future while ensuring that our services remain of the highest quality. Together with the London Borough of Harrow, we are working toward a shared vision of a carbon-neutral borough by 2030, creating a legacy of sustainability for generations to come.
